Introducing the types of springs and their applications

The spring is widely used in all kinds of industrial equipment, automobile industry and many household needs. Due to the different uses of springs, different forms of springs are produced to have better performance in different devices. The division of the corners is done based on the type of construction and their shape. Based on the type of construction, springs are divided into two general categories: spiral and torsion, which are known as tension springs, compression springs, wire springs, etc., according to the type of application and their shape. In the rest of this article, we will introduce the types of springs that are widely used in the spring industry and their applications.

Spiral spring

These types of springs, as their name suggests, are made by changing the shape and twisting the wire. The material and thickness of the metal of these springs are different according to the use case. The height that the coils of the spring have together can also be different to change the amount of pressure or tension of the spring, which depends on the production of the spring and its application. The amount of spring pressure is determined using the spring rate criterion. The spring rate is the amount of weight required to compress the spring by one inch. The higher the weight, the higher the spring’s strength and pressure resistance. The spiral spring is divided into two categories, compression spring and tension spring, according to its type of application.

compression spring

In the compression spring, there is a distance between the spiral rings of the spring, which is called the height of the spring. The compression spring stores energy by inserting and contracting the spring and is used to bear the pressure. One of the most widely used types of springs is the compression spring, which has many uses, including car shock absorbers and other things. The pressure rate of these springs depends on the material of the spring wire, the height of the spring circles and the quality of the spring construction.

Tension spring

In a tension spring, energy is stored in it by pulling the spring and released by releasing it. In the tension spring, the rings of the spring are stuck together in the normal state, and when the spring is stretched, the rings are separated until the spring has tolerance. In tension springs, two hooks are placed on both sides of the spring to be placed in the desired location. The two sides of the spring are hooked to a strong place, and after applying pressure that is in the direction of opening the spring, the spring stores and controls the entered energy. A simple example of using a tension spring to control the opening and closing of a door and use in a car wiper.

torsion spring

In a torsion spring, a wire or rod is wound around itself to act to create torque. The force applied to the torsion spring causes energy resulting from the torque in such a way that by pressing on both sides of the spring, the circles of the spring are opened again. Unlike spiral springs, the applied energy is not applied along the length of the spring. This type of spring is used in car accessories and many household items.

coil spring

Spiral spring is known as clock spring because it is used in clocks. This type of spring is made of a steel that looks like a band. In the spiral spring design, the steel band is wrapped around itself and the spring is made. Helical spring is a type of flat spring and the use of this spring is to control the rotational force that can be stored by rotating devices such as clocks. The best use of these springs is devices that have rotating parts in them, and by turning them several times, they save the angle and release it in the desired direction.

Circular springs or garter

Circular springs are steel coil springs that connect two ends of the spring to create a circular shape. They are commonly used in oil seals, belt drives and electrical connections. Circular springs are produced in two types, compression and tension. Compression circular springs apply outward radial forces and tension circular springs store inward radial forces. The production process of these springs is similar to normal compression springs, except that their two ends are connected together. Garter springs, like most springs, are usually made with carbon steel or steel wire. Because they are able to withstand forces from all directions, circular springs are effective in controlling forces in volume, pressure, temperature, and viscosity.

Spring washers
Spring washer, which is a metal washer that is made in the form of a spring and has the features of a spring. These springs are cone-shaped, usually with a hole in the center to accommodate parts such as bolts and nuts. In fact, bolts and nuts are one of the most common uses of these washers. They can also be used to place several parallel springs next to each other.

Although coil springs can be somewhat unstable, you can use them whenever you need a fast-acting mechanism. If you choose the right design, the springs can have constant force over a large deflection. By using this type of design, the bolt tension is maintained before the presence of dynamic load or in conditions where thermal contraction or expansion is high.
